M40 German steel helmet shell bearing later painted inscription to effect it was recovered from the temporary grave of Generalmajor Hans Voss, killed in France near the German border. General Voss was Inspector of Signal Troops in 1942. There are traces of ochre paint and a palm tree suggesting he served in the North Africa Campaign. Minus headband, cradle and chinstrap.The inscription states “Found in the coffin of Generalmajor Hans Voss killed in France near the German border. The body was exhumed in 1946 for re-burial in Germany”. With some research notes.
